Reims is known for its champagne and its champagne tours. We chose one of the tours that was available during the off season, and went to Taittinger. Many of the cellars were used by monks and are deep down in chalk caves.
Scrawled on the front is the current count of bottles in this one alcove--72,212. The bottles are closed with bottle caps at this point in the process. There were about a million bottles stashed away in all of the caves and alcoves. France drinks half of the champagne it makes and exports the other half.
I think the third smallest bottle is a regular sized bottle.

After the tour, we were given a small coupe of champagne and given the opportunity to buy, buy, buy!
