King's Day, Anne Frank House, and the Rijksmuseum

Last year, the queen of the Netherlands abdicated and her son became king.  This is the first year that Holland celebrated King's Day rather than Queen's Day.  This meant that starting Friday night, the party was on.  Our apartment was right near Albert Cuyp Market.  The good news was that it was easy to pick up some cheap orange t-shirts.  The bad news was that there were outdoor stages with bands set up about every block.  I did not sleep.  Luckily, the rest of my family did just fine.
My running shoes are orange, so I felt no need to add anything to my look.  Pierre tried on several hats, but his Acadian head is much bigger than the average Dutch noggin.

One of the reasons I wanted to return to Amsterdam is that I really wanted to take the girls to the Anne Frank House.  I was very proud of them both.  I wrote more about Anne Frank House last year.

Lunch and a little play before heading inside the Rijiksmuseum.
The Rijksmuseum is a beautiful museum with a fabulous collection.  They even have a map that shows what things they think kids will like the most.

One of the most famous paintings is Rembrandt's The Night Watch.  In each room their were laminated posters about a few of the items giving more information and details.  The girls really liked these and do did I.  I took more photos last year.
On the main floor they had a big room set up with picnic tables, blank postcards, colored pencils, and post cards of the paintings in the museum.  We each did one.  Above is Sylvia's copy of van Gogh's self portrait.
This was part of the mosaic on the floor at the Rijksmuseum.

Keukenhof = Tulips!

I love tulips.
Ottawa has a Tulip Festival every year because the Dutch royal family stayed in Ottawa during WWII and the Dutch send a bunch of tulips to Ottawa as thanks each year.

We took a city bus to the airport and then caught the Keukenhof shuttle from there.  The whole trip from city center took about an hour.  Keukenhof (which means kitchen garden) is only open from the end of March to mid-May.  It is the world's second biggest flower garden (the first being somewhere in Dubai).  It is worth the trip; it is absolutely stunning and very family friendly.
First a little education:
1637 marks the peak of Tulip Mania.  Bulbs were worth big money and traded like stocks.  The most popular were the red and white stripey one shown above.  Aphids spread a disease that caused them to look like that.
If you couldn't afford tulips, you could maybe afford a painting of tulips.
Tulips come from the mountains between Turkey and China.

We were here at the peak of the season and the weather was beautiful.  I took about a billion photos.  Here are a few:

A playground, a zip line, a petting zoo, several family friendly restaurants...

I am grateful.
After resting up at home a bit, we went to the Vincent van Gogh Museum.

Amsterdam: Vondelpark

After our trip to Greece, we rested up for a couple of days and did lots laundry before launching our next trip.  I had such a great time last year when I visited Amsterdam with friends, that I have been wanting to take Pierre and the girls ever since.  I told Pierre this and he managed to plan a trip where we got to go to Amsterdam and we got to go at peak tulip time.
It is an easy three hour trip on a fast train.  I hate flying and find the train very relaxing.
Pierre is the ultimate family trip planner and I am very grateful for him.  He likes Lonely Planet guide books for finding restaurants.  I like the Eyewitness Guides so I can see what I might like to visit.  The French library near us is the travel library and has lots of guide books and the American Library has a good guide book selection, too.  We still seem to have acquired a huge array of guide books.  We arrived at the station in Amsterdam and walked to this yummy restaurant.
Sylvia enjoyed watching the bakers in action through the stairs.
We stayed in an apartment not too far from the city center.  There was a fair set up in Dam Square.

Is this a heron?  We saw lots of these guys hanging out on street lights and the tops of buildings.
After dropping off our bags, we walked over to Vondelpark, an enormous park very close to city center.  I had read about all of the fabulous play structures there and it did not disappoint.  It really made me wonder why the play structures near us in Ottawa are so lame.  These really challenged kids and made them think and use there muscles.  The girls had a great time.
