Across the square from Real Alcazar is the Seville Cathedral and La Giralda (the bell tower). According to me Eyewitness Travel book: Seville's cathedral occupies the site of the great mosque built by the Almohads in the late 12th century. La Giralda, its bell tower, and the Patio de los Naranjos are a legacy of this Moorish structure.
The minaret was finished in 1198. In the 14th century the original Muslim bronze spheres at its top were replaced by Christian symbols.
Christopher Columbus' remains may be in this tomb. The casket is carried by bearers representing the four kingdoms of Spain during Columbus' lifetime. The remains were moved around a lot and whether they are really here is still a mystery.
We climbed up the ramp to the top.
In Moorish times worshippers would wash in the fountain under the orange trees before praying.
