Delphi II

The sanctuary of Apollo at Delphi extends over a series of terraces in the foothills of Mount Parnassos.  For many centuries this was the religious and spiritual centre of the ancient Greek world.

The Centre of the World

Delphi was the geographical centre of the world, the omphalos ("navel"), the meeting point of two eagles dispatched by Zeus from the ends of the universe to find the centre of the world.

Ancient Writing

The first traces of settlement in the region of Delphi go back to Mycenaen times (14th-11th century BC°.  At this period, the main deity worshiped at the small settlement was Ge ("Earth").  In the following period (11th-9th century BC) the cult of Apollo became established at Delphi.

Sylvia did not want to continue to the top.  She was bribed with ice cream and then motored past everyone.  

 

The stadium was home to athletic games and musical events.

Refreshment in a restaurant with a lovely view and telescopes on the terrace.

After dinner we went back to see the Sanctuary of Athena Pronia.  You can see the beginnings of the other ruins above on the left.
