Parisians' decorating impulses are not curtailed by American Thanksgiving and it is beginning to look a lot like Christmas around here. We decided to get in the spirit by participating in the American Cathedral's Love in a Box program. The cathedral assembles and collects about 3000 boxes of gifts for needy kids. The boxes each contain: a warm hat, gloves, soap, toothpaste, a toothbrush, coloring materials, a book, a toy, and some candy.
The Girls Scouts and Boy Scouts are a big part of Love in a Box.
There are state flags hanging in the sanctuary and we even found a big Canadian flag on a stand in the corner.
We took Lillian's box with us and dropped it off at the cathedral. Later in the day, Sylvia's Daisy troop of 10 girls and their parents descended on our apartment. The Daisies, who are the group younger than Brownies, decorated their boxes with stickers and jewels before they were delivered to the cathedral.
These are the boxes that the cathedral puts together. Yesterday these boxes were delivered to the Salvation Army in Strasbourg. On Saturday, we helped fill these boxes, assembly line style, with gifts.
This worker was so fast I couldn't get a good photo! Lillian's and Sylvia's troops did not participate in the assembling of the boxes, but there were lots of other girls scouts present. Pierre was also a great worker.
This Daisy has a very wiggly front tooth.
The boxes that people donate, like Lillian's and Sylvia's, will go to needy kids in Paris. The girls enjoyed helping with the boxes and I hope they learned a little bit about what this holiday season is all about.
