In 810 doge Agnello Partecipazio (804-811) decided to move the seat of the government here. He built a large fortified palace with corner towers, a moat and drawbridges. Construction began on the current place in 1340. The doge's palace was the home of the doge, but it was also the centre of political life in the city.
