The girls would say that Oberammergau was their favorite part of the trip. Pierre booked a "farm stay" on-line. Susi helped us make sure that his Google translating had actually booked us a room and not purchased livestock. Our hotel was attached to a dairy farm. The husband seemed to run the farm and the wife the hotel.
Oberammergau is nestled in the Alps and is a popular ski destination. It is most famous for the Passion Play that they put on every 10 years. In 1633 the Plague came to Oberammergau. The church wardens prayed for God's aid, promising "to hold the Passion tragedy every ten years" if the village were to be freed of the Plague. The epidemic came to an end and the vow was first fulfilled in 1634. In 2010 500,000 spectators came from all over the world to Oberammergau for the plays. Almost everyone who lives in the village acts in the play. The family that runs our hotel had a postcard with all of them, including their baby and three year old at the time, in costume.
Our hotel was fantastic. We had two big, airy rooms with fabulous views. There was also a swing set, a trampoline, and plenty of space to run. We stayed here for three nights and, as you will see, we found plenty to see and do. We were served breakfast every morning in a room with fantastic views. Our last morning, all of the kids staying at the hotel were very excited and running in and out of the room. Finally, someone turned to me and explained the excitement. I explained that I didn't speak any German and they said, "Baby cows. Go see!" Our hard working hotel keeper had just delivered twin calves. They calves were still wet and spindly and the girls were amazed.
Oberammergau is used to tourists. There is a big tourist center in the middle of town with helpful staff and lots of information.
It is almost election time in Germany and we got a kick out of some of their signs.
